Gestalt

Christiaan Moll

The development of my photographic language unfolds through an interplay of study, research, and experimentation with (an) existing or constructed photographic image. Closely considered, this interplay is a means of self-questioning: ‘how do I see my environment?’

My attention and feelings are strongly drawn to the inspiring, geometric abstractions of artists like Alexander Rodchenko, Lazlo Moholy Nagy, Josef Albers, Kurt Schwitters, and Alexander Calder. But I’m equally drawn to the well-founded theories of scientists like Max Wertheimer, Kurt Koffka, and Rudolf Arnheim, all of whom were at the foundation of Gestalt theory.

During this exploration, I playfully discovered that my visual process unfolds along the abstract threefold pattern of ´construction, deconstruction, and reconstruction´ based on a single photographic image. I consider this visual process my signature in development.

At the occasion of the Graduate Exposition of the Fotoacademie, Amsterdam, ´Lumen 25´, I will happily be sharing my project ´Gestalt´ from 11-14 December 2025, at De Kelder, Gierstraat 5, Haarlem (www.lumen25.nl).
